Having a bad hair day can be a real blow to your confidence, but what if you could guarantee better hair all the time from here on out? As it turns out, all it takes to have great hair is a great hair care routine!

If you’re stuck doing the “same old, same old” when it comes to your hair, here are 4 tips to change up your routine and help you get the best hair of your life.

1. Figure out your hair type.

Your hair type is going to determine a lot about how you take care of it. Do you have dry hair, or does it get oily really quickly? Is it fine or thick? Do you have a lot of volume or does it tend to lay flat? Sometimes, more than one of these might be true all at once!

Keep this information in mind when buying products. For example, a moisturizing conditioner could work wonders for dry hair but can weigh down fine hair and make oily hair more greasy if you’re not careful. When in doubt, read reviews online to see what other customers are saying.

2. Your shampoo matters.

When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, you get what you pay for. Drugstore products might be less expensive, but that’s because they have lower concentrations of helpful ingredients and a higher volume of fillers that make them less effective overall.

Your stylist can help give you personalized recommendations about what shampoo and conditioner to buy depending on your hair type. Don’t be afraid to ask the next time you’re at a salon! Even if salon shampoos seem more expensive, they’re more cost-effective in the long run because you don’t have to use as much in order to see a difference.

3. Protection is key.

If you use heat styling tools (like hairdryers, curling irons, or straighteners) on your hair at all, you need to be using a heat protectant. Most are sprays that can be applied to wet or dry hair. Be sure you completely cover your hair in the protective spray and brush it through for total coverage.

Even if you don’t use heat styling tools, the sun’s rays are harsh and can damage your hair over time. Invest in a protective spray that can shield your locks from the sun and keep it looking youthful.

4. Don’t overdo it with product.

Using too many styling products can weigh your hair down and cause buildup, leaving your hair looking dull and lifeless. Try to limit your rotation of styling products and how much you use of each. Most of the time, less is more.

If you use any hair products on the regular, it’s a good idea to invest in a clarifying shampoo to use once a week. This will clear away buildup and leave your scalp and roots looking and feeling refreshed.

Overhauling your hair care routine can seem intimidating at first, but with a few carefully-selected products, you’ll be well on your way to having healthy, happy hair.
