You use your lips everyday for talking, eating, and drinking, but how often do you really think about how you treat them? The lips are one of the most vulnerable parts of the body, and it’s important that we take good care of them—both to keep them looking nice as well as feeling healthy.
Here are 5 tips to help you give your lips the best care possible.
1. Stay Hydrated
Have you ever noticed how easy it is for your lips to become dry and chapped? One of the easiest ways to prevent this is to drink water! When your body is properly hydrated, your lips are naturally moisturized from the inside out, keeping your skin healthy and preventing the cracking or splitting that sometimes happens, especially in drier months.
Dead skin on the lips can feel uncomfortable and block the sensitive skin underneath from receiving moisture. It’s a good idea to exfoliate your lips on occasion to keep them smooth and allow your lip balms to be fully absorbed. Opt for a gentle lip scrub or make your own out of sugar and olive oil, but be careful not to do it too often. Over-exfoliation can make your lips more sensitive.
Not sure what to use for a lip scrub? We sell some fantastic lip scrubs from Ginger Lily Farms Botanicals in “Chocoholic” and “Dreamsicle” flavors. Give them a try!
Even if you drink a lot of water, everything from the wind to dry indoor air can cause your lips to become chapped. To help them stay healthy, moisturize both day and night by using lip balms designed to keep lips healthy. This will also keep lips looking younger and plump up aging lips that might be beginning to show fine lines.
One of the most common causes of dry lips is licking them too often. When your saliva evaporates, it leaves lips drier than ever. Keeping a layer of balm on will help protect your lips from drying out so easily.

4. Avoid Harmful Ingredients
Many of the lip products we like to use, from lip balm to lipsticks, can contain ingredients that actually dry out our lips. Watch out for products containing alcohol, artificial fragrance, synthetic dyes, and parabens, as these can all cause dry lips or allergic reactions.
Whenever possible, opt for natural lip products and avoid any that contain ingredients you might be allergic to.
5. Slather on SPF
Unlike the rest of your skin, your lips don’t contain melanin—the pigment that helps protect skin from sun exposure. This means that your lips are especially sensitive to the sun and can burn easily. To make matters worse, products like lip gloss can actually cause your lips to burn more quickly.
If you’re going to be outside for any length of time, skip the gloss and opt for a lip product that contains SPF. This is most commonly found in plain lip balms, but these days there are tinted balms and even lipsticks that contain SPF if you prefer a little color.
