5 Ways to Live Your Best Life in 2018

Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 16:30

At the start of each year, many people think about how they’re going to do things differently in the coming months. Maybe they make resolutions or maybe they don’t, but one thing tends to be a recurring theme: People want to do things better in the new year than they did the year before.

We’re no strangers to this principle and want to do what we can to help you harness your own power to make this an incredible year. To truly get the most out of 2018, make an effort to focus on yourself.

Here are 5 ways to live your best life this year.

1. Practice mindfulness.

Contrary to what some believe, mindfulness and meditation has little to do with religion. Instead, it’s the practice of maintaining consistent awareness – awareness about your everyday thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.

To start practicing mindfulness, you don’t need to buy anything or do much. Simply find a comfortable spot to sit, set a timer (start with a relatively short amount of time, like 5 minutes, when you’re just getting into it), and focus your attention on your even breathing and relaxed body.

Don’t worry if your mind strays to other things while you’re meditating. That’s normal! When you realize you’ve lost track of your mindfulness focus, return your thoughts to where you were. With continued practice, you’ll find you feel less stressed and more positive.

2. Track your goals.

Setting goals is a great way to bring purpose and meaning into an otherwise dull existence. If you’re always working toward something, you’ll continually find ways to improve yourself and enrich your life.

Make a point to write down your goals. By committing them to paper, you’re more likely to truly work toward them and stay motivated. Be sure you’ve chosen goals that are actually attainable and that you have a tangible way to track your progress. Physically marking off milestones will help your motivation, too.

3. Resolve to stay positive.

Unfortunate things happen and can really put a damper on your positive attitude. When stuff goes wrong, it’s so easy to take on a negative mindset. The problem, though, is that negativity can take so much out of you.

No matter what you’re going through, remember there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Do your best to find positive things that are happening and turn your negativity around. Your body and your mind will thank you for it.

4. Take care of your body.

This can mean a number of different things, but the main point is to be kind to your body and treat it well. Here are a few ideas:

  • Eat things that are good sources of fuel for your muscles and try to be more aware of the food choices you make throughout the week.
  • Take time each week to truly relax: Take a long, hot bath or shower without being concerned of spending too long in the bathroom.
  • Schedule regular massages.
  • Do something good for your skin, whether it be getting a full facial, doing a few home-care regimens, or simply investing in a good moisturizer.
  • Get a pedicure or a foot massage.
  • Invest in a foam roller to care for sore muscles and promote stretching at home.

These are far from the only ways to indulge your body. Whatever you like best, make a point to do it well and do it often.

5. Find your “one thing.”

What’s the one thing in your life that makes you happiest? Is it playing a sport? Reading books? Making music?

Whatever it is, set aside time to do it more often. When we’re consistently doing things we love, we’re more likely to remain positive and get more joy from life. Even if it’s hard to find time for your “one thing,” do your best to find a place for it on your schedule a few times this year. You’ll be glad you did.

Let this year be your best year yet. Take good care of yourself – mind, body, and soul. By letting yourself live a life you’re proud of, you pave the way for personal growth and happiness.

Here’s to you this year – cheers!
